The Lake of the Woods District Hospital is rolling out a new meal room service program.

Starting Monday, patients will be able to order the food they want to eat, when they want it.

“I think it will greatly increase our patient satisfaction,” said Jodie Saarinen, manager of nutrition and food services at the hospital.

In July 2014, the hospital did a waste audit to look at how much food they throw out. They found out the hospital has about a 40 per cent waste rate. Once food heads out of the kitchen, they can’t reuse food that comes back untouched. For example, in the summer they wasted two crates of milk a day.

Saarinen thinks this new process will reduce the “excessive” waste.
