From the beginning, Partners HealthCare has made a commitment to improving the health of our communities, locally and globally. We accept the responsibility to take a leadership role in protecting our environment through a focus on sustainability. We must take steps now so future generations will benefit from the decisions we make and the actions we take today.
Two years ago Partners hired a Director of Sustainable Initiatives and formed a Steering Committee to guide that work. We are beginning to see a decrease in energy consumption through implementation of our strategic energy master plan as we move to a goal of a 25 percent reduction by 2014. We are embracing environmentally preferable purchasing, working with our group purchasing organization to collect information about the chemical content of products evaluated for use in our hospitals.
We are also initiating a study through a collaborative effort with several clinical equipment manufacturers to reduce the energy consumption and improve the interoperability of their products. These are just a few of the initiatives we are involved with aimed at reducing our environmental footprint as we protect the health of our communities.
I co-chair the health care Sector group of the Boston, MA Green Ribbon Commission. We have enlisted CEO support from 12 health care systems operating in greater Boston to participate in a two-year program to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gases. As leaders we have a responsibility to the communities we serve to stay focused on what is best for our climate and for our future.
